Investing in outdoor education

We are delighted to be working with Oakwood Secondary School in Nuneaton, supporting students with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh scheme. https://ows.ceatrust.co.uk/

Oakwood is a special educational needs school, working with students with complex physical, social and communication difficulties. With our support, Oakwood have 15 students enrolled in the scheme this year but as our funding has been used to buy tents, rucksacks and other outdoor gear that can be reused year on year, this really is an investment to help Oakwood continue to grow the DofE scheme in the school. The value and importance of outdoor education in supporting the development of young is clear:

“The DofE award has so much to offer our young people. The award instils a great sense of purpose especially with the volunteering where we have teamed up with the Canal River Trust and adopted a stretch of the Coventry Canal to maintain and take care of. The award overall provides them with a taste of independence, helping build their own resilience and self confidence. Working towards and completing the award will be a real challenge for our young people but also a great experience and achievement.” (Gerald Murphy, Head of Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, Oakwood)

We were particularly touched that as part of their preparation, the students still sent individual applications sharing their ambitions and inspirations. As a group they had also researched the origins of Cam and Bear and read Andrew and Lucy’s Blogs. They said that their ‘sense of adventure, passion for the outdoors and bravery was clear to see and inspiring’.

Thanks to all our supporters in helping Oakwood School and we look forward to sharing updates and more photos of their expedition later in the year.

We now really need your help to generate more funding to help other schools and young people reach their full potential. Please share our message, donate or consider nominating us as your chosen charity for any sponsored event or challenge you may be participating in.
